I hate fruit flies. Every late summer these unwanted guests arrive. I was determined to get rid of them. A friend's comment "Oh, fruit flies! You can never get rid of fruit flies!" made me more determined than ever to be rid of them. I have succeeded. Through research on the net I learned all about them and their life style. Here is the short version. First of all, there are many different varieties. Some types breed in drains and others just in any warm moist place. Fruit flies often get into your house when you shop at the market and bring in fresh fruit and leave it out on the counter. So, here is how to get rid of them. Put away as much fruit as possible in the fridge. If you do leave fruit out, wash it and consider covering with a towel. The secret is to leave out NO food. Wash or rinse all wine glasses or you are providing an all night pub for the fruit flies. Sweep and wash your kitchen floor. Keep recycling area super clean. Wash out bottles and cans and clean the recyle bin very regularly. Wash your kitchen sink and bleach and scrub the drain area. Process garbage regularly. I keep a tiny garbage container under the sink with a small plastic bag - I use Shaw's market bags they give you for free when you shop there. I regularly tie up the Shaw's bag and bring it to the garbage bin outside my house. Anything which can be composted in brought out to my compost bin. Items ready for compost in my kitchen are kept in a covered plastic container. If you do all these things, you will have ZERO or near zero fruit flies.
